Farmer Listening Sessions for the Roanoke Valley, VA
In December 2016, after months of work, LEAP (Local Environmental Agriculture Project) presented a regional food assessment[leapforlocalfood.org] to the Roanoke Valley Local Food Committee (an effort of the Roanoke Valley-Allegheny Regional Commission[rvarc.org]). One key aspect that is missing from this assessment-- is the farmer and food producer voice.
LEAP will be hosting a series of three Farmer Listening Sessions in the Roanoke Valley area in late February/early March. The Listening Sessions are meant to be a platform for communication, where farmers can gather to network and to collectively talk about issues that matter most to them. Input from the farmer listening sessions will help communicate the economic, environmental, and social issues surrounding local agriculture to community stakeholders and will help inform the design and implementation of projects and policies to support local farmers.
