What Is A Factory Farm?

Fact:  Farming does not look the same as it did 50 years ago, or even 20 years ago.  Advancements in technologies, new understanding about soil and the environment, new crops and methods of production, and the changing demands of consumers have all contributed to the change.  The wonderful thing is, there is so much diversity in agriculture - in the size of the farms, in  what they produce, in how they market, and more...and it provides consumers with more options than ever.  What has not changed is that the majority of farms are still owned and operated by families...so why are we hearing so much about "factory farming?"

Cookies and Cows

I love to cook and bake.  Truly, I do.  And this time of year – cold weather, holidays, friends and family gathering together, just seems to call for it (my dishwasher may not appreciate it quite as much – fairly certain it is considering going on strike).  As I pulled the last tray of molasses cookies out of the oven last night (the soft, chewy kind – they are one of my favorites!), it made me think of all the wonderful food that we have been preparing or enjoying during all of the holiday festivities.

Robots, Cows and the Bay Bridge!

7 farms, 3 states, more than 550 miles and two days all combined for a busy but educational experience for more than 50 dairy producers.  Throughout 2016 Farm Credit of the Virginias has offered a multi-part workshop series for dairy producers as an extension of the Dairy Management Institutes (DMI) that are offered each spring.  This series focused on helping producers to create a business plan for their operations, and included several industry professionals and one on one time with Farm Credit loan officers to assist with the completion of the business plan.

National Eggnog Month - Happy Holidays!

The holidays are a time of traditions for many people….and one of the traditions that I love this time of year is eggnog!  I know, I know, it is not healthy for you, but it tastes so good!  Before kids, I used to make my own from scratch, but that can be very time consuming…and time is something I don’t have a whole lot of anymore.  Besides, there are so many great “pre-made” options out there, I don’t really feel too bad taking the “lazy” way out….  I was very excited to see eggnog making its way into the grocery stores for this holiday season, so it seems completely appropriate that December is National Eggnog Month – who knew!
