One Mission. Many Voices

600+ people. 1.5 days.  And an incredible story.  It’s amazing what those three things can do.  Last week we were fortunate to be able to participate in a national event with the Farm Credit System, which brought together over 600 people, including several of our Ag Biz Planner graduates, to help tell agriculture’s story in a place that needs to hear it – our nation’s capital.  Starting with a lunch featuring Secretary Sonny Perdue as the keynote speaker, to an afternoon session that included a speech from Senator Roberts on the Farm Bill, and a full day of visits all across Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Farm Credit employees, board members and customers from across the country to share their stories directly with members of Congress and their staff.

Those directly involved in agriculture make up a very small portion of the U.S. population, less than 2%, but they have a huge impact on the country as a whole, and decisions that will be made during the next Farm Bill will directly impact how effectively and efficiently they will be able to do their jobs.  As a group, those representing Farm Credit met with numerous senators, congressmen and their staff to talk about what the Farm Bill, and specific items within it, will mean to them on their operations and in their businesses – sharing real, honest and specific stories about how crop insurance, rural infrastructure, and strong support from agencies such as FSA and Farm Credit are necessary to continue to provide the food, fiber, and other resources our country depends on.  The theme throughout the entire trip was “One Mission, Many Voices”, a theme that will be echoed through the next two years as Farm Credit continues to share stories from farmers and agribusinesses across the country.

The event ended with a farmers market and reception held in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress.  An estimated 1200 senators, congressmen and staffers came to sample products from across the country and visit with some of the producers responsible for those products.  It was an incredible event held in an amazing venue that helped to show just how much impact agriculture has on many different aspects of our day to day lives.

The breadth and variety of agriculture represented during this day and a half event was incredible, and is a true testament to what can be accomplished when we join many, diverse voices together for one common mission.  Interested in hearing some of these stories yourself?  You can visit to see stories from across the country.  Do you have a story to share?  We’d love to hear it!
