Fair Season! Funnel Cakes, Livestock Shows...and Record Keeping??

Fair season is officially in full swing, and with that comes funnel cakes, Ferris wheels, and…livestock shows!  4-H and FFA livestock projects are a great opportunity for youth to learn so much – about caring for animals, responsibility, good sportsmanship, working hard, and recordkeeping.   Yes, record keeping.  Record keeping is a great skill to learn, and the earlier it starts the better…but it is generally not the favorite part of a livestock project.  Record books are sometimes forgotten until the last minute, and then have to be completed in a scramble – which is not fun for parents or 4-H and FFA students.  Keeping up with the records throughout the life of the livestock project can also be a hassle – often it means a notebook kept in the barn so you can write things down, shoving receipts for feed in a folder pocket to record later, getting your notebook dirty or dusty, and potentially forgetting to record something or losing paperwork you need.

We completely understand – our entire Knowledge Center team has been involved in 4-H and FFA projects, and we know what it can be like.  To help make life a little easier, we have created an electronic record keeping excel file that matches up with the current 4-H record books.  This excel file can be downloaded from our website and saved on your computer – and then can be updated as needed.  This should make it easier to fill in the information when it is time to complete record books, and hopefully will help cut down on errors!  You can view or down load this electronic record book here.
