Summer Cookouts and Food Safety

The heat is here in full force, and the 4th of July holiday will be here before you know it!  This time of year is perfect for cookouts and picnics with friends and family, but it also generally sees an increase in foodborne illnesses.  It doesn’t have to though!  USDA along with the CDC have a great resource for food safety tips and suggestions to help keep your summer parties going without the worry of food poison or other potential illnesses.

Tips include making sure that you are cutting on a clean surface with clean knives, and making sure to keep produce and cooked food separate from raw meat, both when transporting and when preparing!  They also share proper internal temperatures for different meats as well as other safe handling tips in a great infographic:

And if you are looking for more information on safe food handling, they have many other infographic resources (in both english and spanish) here!  Finally, if you would like more information on food safety, you can visit www.foodsafety.gov/.  This site includes information on current recalls and alerts, tips and information on safe food handling, a section on reporting a problem and even an ask the expert section!

Be sure to take advantage of all the fresh, local food throughout the summer at your cookouts and picnics  - and we hope these tips and tricks will help you to be able to enjoy them safely!  Happy cooking!!
