Fourth Consecutive Ag Biz Planner Program Helps Another Group of Farmers to Succeed!

The Farm Credit University Ag Biz Planner Program is off to a great start as the fourth consecutive class kicked off at the end of August. Through Farm Credit University, Farm Credit of the Virginias is partnering with Farm Credit associations in Virginia and North Carolina to conduct the program. The course is designed to grow and enhance financial planning, budgeting, management and record keeping skills for agricultural businesses and farming operations. The program consists of ten online modules, the development and completion of a business plan, mentorship from a loan officer and as well as countless networking opportunities.

Virginia Youth Wins National Beef Ambassador Competition in Denver, Colorado

Phillip Saunders, from Piney River, Va won  the 2015 National Beef Ambassador Junior Competition in Denver, Colorado, September 26-27, 2014.  The annual National Beef Ambassador competition, which is funded in part by the Beef Checkoff and managed by the American National CattleWomen, Inc., contractor to the beef checkoff, featured 10 JR contestants ages 12-16 and 20 Senior Contestants age 17-21.  JR contestants are judged in the areas of consumer promotion, media interview technique and issues response.

Virginia FFA Team Tops All-American Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest and Junior Dairy Management Contest

High-placing contest individual Cole Leonard of Virginia's Riverhead FFA picked up the $1,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association at the 28th annual Junior Dairy Management Contest, Tuesday, Sept. 16, during 2014 All-American Dairy Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, Harrisburg. 

Leonard teamed up with fellow Riverhead FFA members Jake McCall and Isabelle Leornard to bring home the high score in the FFA division. Participants evaluated two classes of dairy cattle, identified feeds, recognized cuts of meat and answered questions about reproduction and business management to help prepare them for careers in the dairy industry.
