A Labor of Love...and Sweat and Tears...

“In no other country do so few people produce so much food, to feed so many, at such reasonable prices.”
President Dwight D. Eisenhower

President Eisenhower was President more than 50 years ago…and yet these words still ring true today, perhaps even more than they did then.  In 1900, 38% of the United States wad directly employed in agriculture, and today, it is less than 2%.  And still, each U.S. farmer producers enough food and fiber for 165 people both in the U.S. and abroad, and do so with few inputs than they did even 30 years ago.

Farming is a difficult job.  It is late nights and early mornings, working in the snow, rain, heat, and everything in between.  Farmers love what they do, even though it is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week job.  The dedication that farmers give to growing food and fiber for people around the world while doing their best to care for the land, soil and animals in their care, is unparalleled.  Even during the “slow” times (any farmer will tell you there are no slow times…just times where you might be able to get everything done you need to in a 24 hour day), farmers are working hard.  In the winter when the crops have been harvested and the cows have all calved,  farmers are still working to feed livestock, take care of equipment, get organized and prepare for the next task.

This Labor Day we want to take time to appreciate everyone who works hard in their daily jobs, but we especially want to thank our farmers and ranchers.  These hardworking men and women provide so much for our country each and every day…Thank you!!
